A highly unique, substantial pair of antique Chinese Foo Dog guardian lions, intricately hand-carved from solid stone, combining traditional symbolism with decorative craftsmanship. Each lion features an expressive face with prominent rounded eyes, a broad nose, an open mouth revealing carved teeth, and a beautifully textured mane. Their muscular bodies are adorned with elaborate saddles with floral and lotus motifs, surrounded by ornamental borders and scrolling details. Beneath each lion’s paw is a beautifully carved ball, traditionally associated with joy .Each lion rests upon an integral rectangular stone base, lending the sculptures a sense of solidity and permanence.

A particularly interesting feature is the shallow circular recess carved into the back of each lion, within a holder that is carved into a lotus, designed to accommodate a candle. This unusual combination of guardian sculpture and candleholder gives the pair both decorative and functional appeal. When illuminated, the flickering candlelight brings warmth and character to the weathered stone surfaces. Traditionally associated with protection, strength, and good fortune, Chinese guardian lions were placed at entrances to safeguard homes, temples, and important buildings.

The pair retains a beautifully mellow, naturally aged gray stone patina, with subtle mineral variations, surface wear, and traces of old world craftsmanship. The softened edges and weathered details contribute to their authentic antique character. Equally appealing indoors or outdoors, these sculptural candleholders would make a wonderful addition to a garden pathway, courtyard, covered terrace, fireplace, or grand entryway.
