Over 8 feet long, this monumental Chinese antique table is the heart of a room with its impressive scale and strong architectural presence. Finished in lustrous cinnabar-orange red lacquer against a richly patinated moss-green ground, with imperial yellow and gilt accents, the table exhibits rare colors in the 19th Century Qing dynasty. Constructed of solid wood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, the table reflects the durability, craftsmanship, and expressive character associated with Northern Chinese furniture-making. Two flanges evoke the architecture of Chinese temple while five drawers span the front, each carved with vernacular symbolism. Among the motifs are deer, peonies and fish, associated with happiness, prosperity and abundance. Centered beneath the drawers is a carved circular medallion bearing the longevity symbol, providing both a visual focal point and a symbolic blessing for health and long life. The sculpted apron and contrasting colors give the exceptionally long table a graceful rhythm and balance. An exceptionally rare find, this monumental table in excellent condition, is a fantastic example of Chinese furniture conceived on a truly grand scale. 37" high to flanges / 35" to table top.
