Giant Rustic Well Bucket w Iron Bands

This extraordinary, 20-lb, oversized 19th Century wooden well bucket is a wonderful example of traditional craftsmanship and ingenious utilitarian design. Originally used to draw and transport water from a well, its distinctive pointed base is an ingenious part of its historic form. Master craftsmen shaped individual pieces of wood into precise curves, fitting them tightly under tension and reinforcing the vessel with multiple hand-forged iron bands. A substantial solid-wood bar spans the opening, also reinforced with iron, with a heavy iron ring designed to accommodate a bamboo carrying pole. Traditionally, two buckets could be suspended from either end of the pole and carried across the shoulders for balance. The original wood, iron bands, bar, and hardware remain remarkably intact and solid, with a beautiful naturally aged patina. Today, its large scale and sculptural form make it a fascinating decorative object, it can be used to store firewood, rolled towels, pumpkins and gourds, blankets, or other household items while retaining the history and character of an authentic Chinese antique working vessel.
