Giant Wood Trough

This 14.4-lb, 39" wide, monumental 19th-century Chinese wooden trough is hand carved from a single massive block of solid wood. Its deep basin, substantial walls, and long channel-like trough channel demonstrate the skill required to hollow and shape such a large piece entirely by hand. The richly aged surface retains beautiful variations in color, visible tool marks, wear, and patina developed through generations of use. Originally an utilitarian vessel, troughs of this type were used in rural China for handling and controlling liquids such as water or oil. Its unusually large scale and solid one-piece construction give it a wonderfully sculptural presence while preserving the character of an authentic working object. This massive trough can be repurposed as a dramatic planter or displayed as a sculptural centerpiece. It also makes an exceptional rustic container for fruits, pumpkins, gourds, firewood, in a rustic, country or an organic room.
