Antique Chinese Scholar Court Official Figure

This remarkable 19th-century Chinese hand-carved wood statue depicts a seated Ming scholar/official in traditional robes and headdress, retaining its beautifully aged original hand-painted polychrome decoration, including rich cinnabar-red, black, ochre, and gilt tones. Delicate painted details embellish the robes and pedestal, while centuries of natural wear and patina give the surface exceptional character. The face is especially expressive, with a very realistic face, finely rendered eyes, mustache and beard, and a wonderfully dignified, contemplative expression that gives the figure a distinct personality and presence. On the back is a small rectangular aperture closed with its original fitted piece of wood. Such cavities were traditionally used to contain prayers or other consecratory materials.
