A beautiful late 19th century wine table from Northern China. The tabletop is constructed of four members joined by mitered tenons surrounding a floating panel made of a prized, solid single board of red elmwood. Such an ingenuine design allows the solid wood panel to expand and shrink according to humidity within the framework, maintaining structural soundness. The table top connects directly to the legs with pairs of spandrels on both sides carved in the style of clouds and ruyi. Solid stretchers enhance stability and provide additional support. Table is double sided and finished on all sides. A wine table was used in ancient China for wine tasting and during leisure gathering.
